Lenten Projects

Lenten Project 2026

During Lent, the School Council decided that they would like to raise money for the children’s charity Acorns. They felt that it would be nice to support a local charity. Acorns Children’s Hospice provides vital care, love and laughter to more than 780 local children and over 1,000 families each year. We were told that:

  • £175 could provide the funds for a child and their family to have a hydrotherapy session with a Physiotherapist.
  • £1,600 could cover the cost of an oxygen concentrator for a child needing a continuous oxygen supply.
  • £4,210 will fund the role of a specialist children’s nurse for a month.

For our Lenten project, every group thought of their own idea for a stall. Some children chose 'guess the teacher’s baby photo', 'a claw grab machine', and 'name the teddy'. Some children even created things such as bracelets from scratch! The children showed fantastic enterprise skills while having lots of fun!  We also had a walkathon, lunchtime lollies (even in the wet weather!), a PJ day, a mystery tub sale, silver service at lunch time, a cake sale, an Easter egg raffle and Lenten disco.

Our final amount was an incredible £5008.47! We are incredibly grateful to all of the children and their families for this wonderful amount. Not only have our children shown this half-term’s school value of generosity but so have their families! St Laurence Church Junior School and Acorns are extremely thankful, and we look forward to hearing the difference that we will make to some of these children’s lives.

All of this really reinforces our message:

If we all do a little, it adds up to a lot!

Mikanga Primary School

During Lent, the School Council decided that they would like to raise money for our partner school in Malawi. The children had heard that they needed a new football, new netball and they would like desks for the older children in School.

For our Lenten project, every child thought of their own idea for a 'stall' which they ran with their friends. Some children chose 'beat the goalie', 'finish the lyrics', or 'name the teddy' - the children's ideas were endless! We also had a sponsored walk, lunchtime lollies, a mystery tub sale, silver service at lunch time, a cake sale and a Lenten disco. There was a real 'buzz' in school.

Each week we updated the children with how much money they had raised. As a school, we were overwhelmed.

Our final amount was over £5000! We are incredibly grateful to all of the children and their families for this wonderful amount. Mikanga Primary School have already had a delivery of desks and we know that the children at St Laurence have made a huge impact on their lives.

Our children made a video to send to Malawi - please take a look at it below.

LENTEN PROJECT 2024

Our annual Lenten Project was a fantastic success again this year. The school council were involved in choosing who to raise funds for and the decision was made to support the Birmingham Children’s Hospital Charity.

During Lent, all the children went to amazing effort to raise funds for this worthy cause. It's been fantastic to see the generosity of our community coming together to support such an important cause.  Each Year Group had an enterprise week where they wrote business plans leading to running stalls or selling handmade items to other children. It was amazing to see the entrepreneurial skills and teamwork the children showed. The children also had the chance to take part in a sponsored Times Tables Rock Stars Rock-a-thon and attending the very popular Lenten disco!

By everyone participating in our events and donating, you are helping to make a real difference in the lives of children who need it most.  As a school we raised a fantastic total of £2,387.80. Mr Murphy and the pupil leadership team look forward to visiting the hospital in the coming weeks to deliver our amazing donation. We are so grateful for everyone's contributions and ongoing support.

LENTEN PROJECT 2023

Our annual Lenten Project was a huge success again this year with the children working hard during their free time to raise money. We raised a fantastic total of £3,780.52 for Northfield Community Partnership, a charity whose services many of our families benefit from.

Each Year Group had an enterprise week where they wrote business plans leading to running stalls or selling handmade items to other children. Some of the stalls included a guess what’s in the box, higher or lower, nail painting, guess the staff member from baby photos and football, archery and basketball competitions. The children also had the chance to take part in a sponsored dance-a-thon or walk-a-thon, tub sale in Year 5, silver Service by Year 6 members, a super successful cake sale by Years 3 and 4 and a disco!

Northfield Community Partnership were extremely grateful to have received such a large amount towards the many projects they run and would like to pass on their thanks to all the children, parents and staff that helped in raising this money. They will be spending the money raised on food banks, vouchers and warm welcome packs.

As we like to say - if we all do a little, it adds up to a lot! Well done St Laurence!

LENTEN PROJECT 2022

The Lenten Project was a huge success this year with the children working really hard to raise money. We raised an astounding total of £3,924.75 for Pen to Paper Ghana which is incredible.

Each Year group had an enterprise week where they ran stalls or sold handmade items to other children. Some of the stalls included a treasure hunt, nail painting, guess the language and football and basketball competitions. Some of the items made and sold by Year 3 and 4 included homemade bird feeders and keyrings. The children also had the chance to take part in a sponsored dance-a-thon, Easter egg raffle, silver service and a talent show!

Pen to Paper Ghana are over the moon to be receiving such a generous amount of money and would like to pass on their thanks to all the children, parents and staff that helped in raising this money. The money raised will be used to help provide books and libraries to children in some of the poorest parts of Ghana as well as training teachers to be able to deliver the best quality reading and writing lessons to children of all ages.

It really is true – if we all do a little, it adds up to a lot! Well done St Laurence!
