Sport for All
Here at St. Laurence Junior School, we believe there is a sport to suit everybody and we do our best to find it! Sport is enjoyable, motivating and character building and our goal is that our children leave us inspired to continue their chosen sports into their adult lives.
James Albery, England Hockey Player visits St. Laurence Juniors
James spent the afternoon with us delivering a coaching session to year 6 before answering questions and promoting hockey in an assembly. James then did another coaching with children from our Juniors, Infants and West Heath Primary School too. All children had a fantastic time, learnt new hockey skills and are keen to play more hockey. James was excellent throughout the afternoon. He currently has 4 senior England caps and hopes to be challenging for a spot on the GB Olympic Team in Tokyo 2019 - Good luck James and watch this space!
Worcester Wolves Basketball Players visit St. Laurence
Following our school trip to go and watch Worcester play, we were delighted to be joined by 4 members of the Worcester Wolves squad - Perris Blackwell, Jordan Aaron, Orlan (OJ) Jackman and Ben Eaves. They answered questions in assembly before delivering basketball coaching to the whole of year 3. It was a fantastic morning which has inspired many of our children to take up basketball. A huge thank you to the players and to all at the Wolves.
Sainsbury's Active Kids Vouchers
Debee from Sainsbury's came into school to do an assembly, launching this year's Active Kids project. Last year as a school we collected more vouchers than any other in the area, with over 18000! This led to new gymnastics and hockey equipment, as well as replacing play time equipment too. Part of this year's challenge is to try new foods and as a school, we are going to add new and more healthy food choices to our play time options.
As a result of our impressive haul of vouchers, these photos are due to appear in the local papers.
Dance and Gym festival
We had a huge attendance at our termly gymnastics and dance festival. All children who attend the yr3/4 and yr5/6 gymnastics clubs were there and demonstrated their abilities through vaulting and groups sequences which they all performed twice. After an interval we also saw our dance club, joined by several children from other schools too, perform a routine for us. There were a lot of children there and I was extremely impressed with the ability and confidence of these children in their performances.
Unique Signed and Framed St. Laurence Shirts
We were lucky enough to receive a visit from Jenny Gunn, England international cricketer. She signed a school shirt along with fellow England players Danielle Hazell and captain Charlotte Edwards who both delivered staff training for us.
We also have a shirt signed for us by some of New Zealand's Rugby World Cup winning squad from 2015 including Brodie Retallick, Kieran Read and Julian Savea! One of our pupils won the chance to train with the New Zealand squad in London before the World Cup. The shirt also includes signatures from Nick Evans and Winston Stanley, who play for Harlequins in the English Premiership.
Sports Awards 2015
The sports awards are an annual event which recognises the commitment, dedication and determination that the the children have towards their sports. A HUGE thank you to Mr Ellicott for organising and to all the coaches who make our clubs possible. Our success across Birmingham in a wide range of sports can be seen below.
Dance and Gymnastics festival
Each year the children who have been attending our dance or gym clubs perform for their friends and family in our festival. Thank you to the hard work of Mr Wakeman during these clubs and the parents for their support.
On Wednesday 4th June we had an opportunity to take part in archery workshops hosted by Robin Arrows Archery.
Each class took part and learnt the basics of archery, including how to keep safe.
England Cricket Star visits St Laurence
On Friday 7th March, we had the pleasure of a special guest in school. Jenny Gunn is Vice Captain for the England cricket team who has been an integral part to many successes, including winning the Ashes against Australia in January.
She came into assembly and answered questions from each class, then took a PE lesson for 4RW and 3E, showing them skills and making them work hard in a number of mini matches!
Jenny also worked with Year 6 to provide them with a writing stimuli, followed by meeting each of the classes in the school.
A signed St Laurence polo shirt from her and fellow team mates Danielle Hazell and Captain Charlotte Edwards, will be framed and hung in school.
